Life of a Grandma

I woke up on Monday, it was a school day. And I had the worst sleep ever! It was so noisy and loud as the room next door to mine was my grandma’s. She was snoring like there was no tomorrow! As the oldest, I had to wake up my sibling…. It’s not a bad job. But today as soon as I got out of bed, I left my room only to be greeted by my grandma. Don’t get me wrong, I love my granny (that’s what I call her), it’s just that she can be annoying at times.

“Morning granny Wendy,” I said, trying to grin. I tried my hardest, but I was just too tired. “Good afternoon Alice. Oh, want to play some Lock and Key?” she asked. “I have to get to scho... what do you mean afternoon? “I asked. “It’s 6 p.m.,” she said. “6 p.m.?!” I screeched. All my siblings shot awake after they heard my screech…. There goes my fun disturbing them. I ran to my room and looked straight into my digital clock. It was a.m., not pm. My granny managed to annoy me yet again. “Its, a.m. granny. Ugh, you scared me, granny. I’ve got to get ready for school now.” I said to my granny.

I closed the door, separating me from my granny who on the other side of the door was still smiling. She soon left and went downstairs to get our breakfast ready. All my siblings started getting ready for school, so did I.

We all went downstairs for breakfast only to see nothing on the table. “Where’s the food granny?” my little sister, Bellessa asked. “I am not ready yet. I will take some time, maybe an hour. I am slow today. I had the worst sleep and my back aches… so do my legs.” Granny said with a smile. I rolled my eyes, “Granny, we are leaving for school now. So, we need to eat now. Ugh, let’s just have some cereal.” I said. “
I threw the cereal out as it was expired,” Granny explained. “Mum bought it just yesterday.” My little brother Kin reminded me. “My mistake then.” Granny giggled. My eyes were wide open with frustration. “Grab a piece of bread each and leave. We spent too much time already!” I commanded. I was so annoyed with my grandma.

After school, we all returned home. I entered my room to find everything reorganised! My grandma has switched the items in my drawers and changed my bed position. She redesigned the whole room! She even painted a few walls! She also added weird accessories!

Well, she went beyond my line this time. My jaw fell open. “I redid everything. Like it?” she asked. “No! No, I hate it. I spent so long organizing everything!” I said perturbed. “Well, I redid everything? Don’t you like it?” she repeated again! “It’s my room! Ohhhhh, I am really mad! Please just leave!” I demanded. She left, she looked really sad. I didn’t even feel guilty, I was just so affronted!

That night I finally slept well. I woke up bright and early, ready for school. As I got out of my bed, I felt my backache. I got up and my legs cramped up. I looked in the mirror to find myself looking all wrinkly and old. “I...I…I… I see… I am lucid dreaming. I am a grandma. I suppose it’s cause I scolded granny. Better get this over with I guess.” I said. Even though it was a dream, my legs, and backaches. “Wait, I thought you can’t feel pain when in a dream? Well, this can’t be real… can it?” I whispered to myself.

I decided to just continue my ‘day.’ I left my room which was designed like my grandma's with an aching body into the kitchen. My house looked the same. There stood 3 children, a girl named Alissa was the oldest, Amy was the second girl and Winnie was the youngest boy. “Where’s our food nanny?” Amy asked. “Oh, I’ll prepare it now,” I said realizing I have to make food for some children, and I was their nanny!
The children left to get themselves ready for school. I didn’t know why, but I felt like I knew them already and cared for them. Anyways, I tried to grab some bread to layer it with cheese and jam as somehow, I knew it was Amy’s favourite. I tried to walk fast to grab the bread, but I kept stumbling. My aching body was hurting a lot! By the time I got all the ingredients set on the table the children were already sitting by the table waiting for food.

“I am starving,” Winnie said. “Nanny Alice. We need food now, please!” Alissa exclaimed. “Well, my body is aching. I set all the ingredients out, could you make the food. I need to lay down for a bit.” I said. I remembered how Granny Wendy said almost the same thing. The children agreed without hesitation and made the food themselves. They soon left the house.

I then was left alone in the house. Nobody was there to keep me company as everyone had something to do... all except me. I couldn’t do much anyway, I couldn’t even make jam and cheese sandwiches.

I went to the lounge and sat down. Hoping to watch some nice shows on the tv. As I was watching a cooking program (somehow it was interesting at the time), I suddenly really missed my granny, my mum, and my siblings. When you’re a granny, you have to deal with the loss of your loved ones, I realised.

That evening the kids came back. They all got ready for dinner. I prepared a baked chicken. How I did this I do not know. Before dinner, Amy asked me, “Nanny what time is it?” “It's 9 am dear,” I replied. “What??!! I am late for school!” She screeched. Alissa calmed Amy down by saying, “Nanny means pm.”

The kids went to dinner. They all seemed tired and grumpy. When your old you have to deal with grumpy, naughty, and stuck-up kids. I feel like I was one at times now. I tried making things fun by talking and cracking jokes, but the mood didn’t change.

That night when we all went to bed I was woken up with a knock on my door. A clamorous knock. I wearily got out of bed and answered the door. “Nanny Alice, you are snoring really loudly. It's honestly so deafening. Amy, Winnie, and I can’t fall asleep. Sorry.” Alissa complained… but in a polite manner. I apologised and tucked the kids into bed again. My bones were so sore doing all these things for just a couple of kids. When you’re old we automatically disturb others at times. It was then I realised my age, I was 89, exactly the same age as Granny Wendy, I was on the verge of death! I didn’t even mind being on the verge of death because:

That night, I had ghastly dreams. I missed my family so much. And most of all, I missed Granny Wendy. I was ever so rude to her. I missed her too much! Then I woke up. I was in my 12-year-old body again! I was so happy! I ran up to granny Wendy and hugged her. I apologised for how rude I was being. From then on, I was never rude to any old person, especially granny Wendy. I did miss Alissa, Amy, and Winnie, but I knew I’d see them soon enough. For now, I was happy to be back with Granny Wendy.

Perfection - Poem

I try to find words for your ethereal beauty, but I stumble in your presence, Your intoxicating energy, My cheeks ablaze, Please jealousy, consume me,  Her light is too bright, Yet it shines with me, Your honey words of poetry, Those of which you sing, I am spellbound and falling under your incantation, The moon could be our gem, The sun could be our ring, The worlds but an orb in your earthly eyes.

From the Men of Troy - poem

To touch the scars of your soul through your eyes and deepen them, To wield the my trojan tongue in hopes of dying for her, Her who sent those ships to sink, Her who held hope in her arms and harnessed its impact against us, Her who ran into the sand and bathed in their flames,  She loved it so much that she lived in its ashes You stopped being a monster because I loved you, I found what I loved and let it kill me, She is the closest thing to magic, To god, To human, Time told me it wasn't love, But if this wasn't it, what could it be? I was blinded by hopes of church bells and chariot rides, Those that hide your glow because it's mine I wished to died for treasure, No remorse, but just loss of something better, Rest Helen, Everything was more beautiful when we were doomed,

Should we fall? - poem

Distraught, disfigured, shattered, How do I leave my demons? How do I find a cure? Within these walls, hope has brewed,  Translucent and pure, like a fleeting dream,  Let us depart, venture into the unknown. Before departure, This maiden, she spared a glance behind, Through her watery waterline, The deception, She realised nobody was waiting, And so she plunges forward, into the depths of madness, Let us follow, embrace her uncharted path, Even if we must fall, Lets join her Past foggy glasses, We learn the essence of joy,  To confront our fears or be crippled by our despairs,  The choice is ours to make, For destiny is completely malleable if you hit hard enough
